Ao Nang Beach during the Low Season After the Songkran Festivals, the Low Season has arrived in Ao Nang and all other tourist destinations on Thailands West Coast. This is the time for hotel discounts ala 3=2, cheap flights to Thailand and a guaranteed relaxing holiday on Krabi's beaches. Beaches and walking areas near the beach are now empty and you'll have the full attention of all hotel and restaurant staff for yourself. Few businesses have canceled their services already, like the Expressboat from Ao Nang to Phuket and Koh Lanta and the daily boat to Koh Phi Phi will also stop it's service soon. If you want to go to these places, you can alternatively use boats from Krabi Town, buses or taxis for Koh Lanta or Phuket. There are also fewer boats on the beach in Ao Nang now and trips to the local islands and Railay or Phra Nang Beach depend on waves and weather. There are however only a very few days were the Longtail Boats can not go due to weather conditions. For everybody who comes to Ao Nang now during the low season, we wish you a nice and quiet holiday.

The HMS Strongbow sunk several ships off the west coast of Siam in September 1944 On September 2nd, 1944 the british submarine "HMS Strongbow" destoyed and sunk at least two ships, a japanese military frighter named "Tosu Maru" and another small siamese transport vessel about 26 NM east of Phuket. These two ship wrecks are still there, only a very few miles out of Ao Nang Beach. One of the wrecks is right in front of Poda Island while the other one rests about half way between Koh Ya Wa Sam and the southern tip of Koh Yao Yai. The first one, in front of Poda Island is only a hull, filled with scrap, while the second one , a little out in the sea, has a huge body and you can still see something that looks like a large steam boiler on the ship and some long masts and ropes surounding the wreck. A lot of fishing nets are also entangled in the wreck. Unfortunately, all dive centers in the area of Ao Nang have lost their sense for adventure and are only doing their standart trips to the big King Cruiseer Wreck, Shark Point and Koh Phi Phi. Way back in 1993, when we opened up our dive shop in Ao Nang, it was one of our first duties, to dive the two wrecks. For the small one at Poda Island we just needed our Boat Man from Ao Nang to find it but for the second one, we had to hire an old man, who found the wreck in the middle of the sea, only by some landmarks far away. It's still a miracle to me how he did that. Today, with fishfinders and GPS it would be much easier, of course. The sea battle between Ao Nang and Phuket of the HMS Strongbow is even mentioned in Wikipedia and some other sources, but who ever wants to find the wrecks should know, that the coordinates mentioned in the articles are not right, they might be the coordinates of the submarine, not of the wrecks itself. |

Same procedures as every year, Songkran in Ao Nang. Songkran is the official "Thai New Year" and the begin of the rainy season. Traditionally, people will splash each other with water on this day but in areas with tourists, that must be some extra fun. Hundreds or maybe even thousands of Thai people load their pickup trucks with huge water tanks and friends and drive to Ao Nang, to join the water war. The police declares the Main Road in Ao Nang a One Way Road, all the way fromt the big junction in the old village to Nopparattara Beach. So every body who wants to join the water splashing with cars, must drive for about 15 km to go once around. Traffic stuck up today already at about 10 am this morning, just after the police blocked the traffic out of the village and declared the one way road. |
