Entrance Ticket at Chicken Island Since yesterday, there is an entrance fee for all visitors on Chicken Island. There have always been rumors that one would have to pay at Poda or Chicken Island but most people went there without paying anything. Since yesterday however, two men with uniform walking around the island and cashing in 100,- Baht "Foreigner Fee" from anybody who gets out of a boat at Chicken Island. The funny thing now is, that they could take that money already when they sell the boat ticket in Ao Nang but obviously they don't want to tell the tourist at this point. Get there first, then you have to pay. From our experience, most tourist probably won't care about the 100,- Baht but a family with four or five members would maybe think about it, going there or not. Since the entrance fee is called a "Foreigner Fee" it is obvious that Thai people don't have to pay that money... |

A few new shop units are beeing build in Ao Nang at the corner at the Phra Nang Inn Hotel. The shops are relatively small, only 3 by 6 metres and without water and toilet. The rent for one of this shop units however is giant and meets a new record in Ao Nang: 900,000,- Baht per year or 75,000,- Baht per month for only 18 m³. Who ever want to rent one of this units, must take in consideration, that the season is still only 6 month long, from November till April and within this time you have to make your money or you are lost. At least one shop is beeing taken for a travel office, but others will follow very soon.
Good news in the meantime for all fans of Planet Ao Nang Bar. It had to give space for the new Burger King Restaurant a few weeks ago but will now reopen right next to the new shops mentioned above.

The new Macro Shopping Mall in Krabi will open it's Gates for public tomorrow. We went there today already to have a look, what they have to offer. The Products seem to be even more rich than in the Lotus Mall which opened just a few weeks ago. There are giant refrigerators which stuff like Strawberries, Raspberries, Pears and other nice things, specially for Farrang needs. Remarkable is also the big meat counter which even covers some German specialties like Bavarian "Weisswurst" and Cheese sausage, a specialty for BBQ. Also the cheese department offers many different sorts of cheese. All in all a lot of stuff for the local Expats. However, many products come in big packings, because the Macro Markt sees it's customers mainly in the local hotel and restaurant business. We wish all of you a "Happy Shopping" from tomorrow on... |

Today is the last day of the famous Vegetarian Festival in Thailand, which in usually celebrated by Thailand's chinese Immigrants. It runs over several days and originates in the Chinese Temples in Thailands Cities. The Vegetarian Festival is well known by tourists on Phuket Island but is also celebrated in other cities like Surathani and Krabi. Sacred rituals are performed at various Chinese shrines and temples and aesthetic displays such as boddy piercing, walking barefooted over hot coals and ascending ladders with bladed rungs are performed by entranced devotees known as "Ma Song". Men and women puncture their cheeks with various items including knives, skewers and other household items. It is believed that the Chinese gods will protect such persons from harm, and little blood or scarring results from such mutilation acts. This is definitely not recommended for the feint hearted to witness. Some scary pictures fro the procession in Phuket can be seen on this German Site! |
